Description |
Deutsch: Die Königin von Saba vor König Salomon von der Innenseite des Heilsspiegelaltars, um 1435-1440. Nadelholz.
English: The Queen of Sheba in front of King Solomon from the inside of the salvation mirror altar, around 1435-1440. Coniferous wood. Originally, the tablet was part of a huge reredos for the high altar of a Basel church. It shows the compact figures typical of Witz, which are composed of plastic, often massive shapes. The sometimes carved-looking faces and speaking hands give them liveliness. At the same time, the painter shines with a pointed description of materiality, as here with the precious stones on Salomon's velvet hat or the iridescent green tones of his robe. |
