DescriptionShip in Queen Charlotte Sound (19224669614).jpg
This photograph of an artwork shows a ship in Queen Charlotte Sound. The back of the print states that it is the Cuba, but another version at the National Library notes: 'The Tory in full sail, sailing through Tory Channel, with a Māori canoe with two sails behind it, a smaller canoe with masts in front. Seabirds on rocks in the foreground, a flax bush and mānuka on a headland to the right and a rocky island in the middle distance with the hills of Queen Charlotte Sound in the background
Inscriptions: Inscribed - Recto - bottom left: title in pencil; also bottom right, C. Heaphy [enclosed in a cartouche] and below that G. F. Swainson March 1851. [i.e. copy of a Heaphy drawing by Swainson].' As noted, it was originally created by Charles Heaphy, who arrived in this area in 1839 aboard the Tory.
