Summary

[edit]
Media data and Non-free use rationale
Description Image from Malaysian military radar that, purportedly, shows Malaysia Airlines Flight 370 as it travels over the Strait of Malacca. The image is being presented to family members of passengers on the flight who were gathered at Lido Hotel Beijing.

The white circle in the center-left of the image appears to highlight a spot where the aircraft was not detected by radar. The left segment of the flight's path follows air route N571 between waypoints VAMPI & MEKAR.

Use in article (WP:NFCC#7) Malaysia Airlines Flight 370
Purpose of use in article (WP:NFCC#8) This image illustrates the track the aircraft took as it departed the west coast of Malaysia. How Flight 370 disappeared is a significant element of the subject and this image presents evidence of how the plane disappeared (the leftmost location on the path is the last radar contact made with the aircraft and its last precise location.
Not replaceable with
free media because
(WP:NFCC#1)
After extensive searching online, this appears to be the only image of the raw data obtained by the Malaysian military radar. A map of the plane's path, according to radar data, was published in the report MH 370 – Definition of Underwater Search Areas released by the Australian Transport Safety Bureau. However, the background image in the report's map is copyrighted satellite image contained in the Google Earth program. That image is a plotted path (not the raw data like this photo shows) and while it could be used in a derivative work against a different background, the resultant derivative work would not seem as credible (ie. exude as much confidence in its accuracy) as this image does. The significance of this image as evidence in the article is such that it belongs directly in the article and not accessed via the External Media template.
Minimal use (WP:NFCC#3) This image is only going to be used on one Wikipedia page where it is a very authoritative source and used in the relevant section.
Respect for
commercial opportunities
(WP:NFCC#2)
This is the only known image available (at least online, through searches performed with English language words) of a very important/valuable. The image size used is small and the file is only to be used on one Wikipedia page. Aside from the inadvertent hand in the lower left, this photo is essentially a derivative work consisting almost entirely of a work created, presumably, by the Malaysian government (the presentation was given by a Malaysian military representative, according to an English translation of the source by Google Translate). Other pictures of the same image from different angle show the bottom 10% of the slide [1][2] and colour change resulting from flash reflection. The photographer hasn't added anything significant to an image in which copyright belongs to the Malaysian government; it is doubtful that the Malaysian government will be harmed by use of this image, as they don't have an interest in monetary gain from the release of information about the loss of Flight 370.
