Summary

Description
English: Derailed railcars litter the tracks following the 1980 Kelso rail accident. In the upper portion of the image, looking west, the mostly-demolished forward cars of runaway Union Pacific work train Extra 3119 West lie in a sea of crossties hurled from the cars as they derailed; the rear part of the train, with progressively less damage from the collision and derailment, extends down the middle of the frame, with the mostly-undamaged caboose of Extra 3119 West near the bottom, adjacent to wreck-clearing equipment. To the left (south) of the tracks (the left-hand [southern] one of which was laid shortly after the accident to allow rail traffic to bypass the accident site) lie two derailed automobile-carrying rack cars from UP Extra 8044 West, struck from behind by the runaway; a third auto rack car and the caboose from Extra 8044 West also derailed but are not in frame, while the remainder of Extra 8044 West and the wrecked locomotive from Extra 3119 West stayed on the track structure and stopped several hundred feet west of this location.

Original NTSB caption: "Figure 2.--Aerial view of accident location viewed to the west. The caboose and cars of Extra 3119 West are to the right of the tracks. Derailed auto rack cars of the VAN train are to the left. The left-hand track was constructed after the accident for train operations during wreckage clearing operations."
