Description |
The Cashel Bell, which is a four-sided bell, is widest at the mouth and tapering towards the crown. The handle emerges from the crown in a semi-circular loop. The two gently curving faces are decorated with engraved crosses and all four faces are decorated with panels of a key pattern. The present handle is a 20th century replacement. This bell was found near Cashel in 1849. |

Object history | File of material relating to a bronze bell, known as the Cashel Bell. Includes photocopy of object description sheet which includes sketch of object (date unspecified). Notes that it was found in Cashel, county Tipperary, in 1849; transcription of text of label which described object in foundation building display (c. 1996); photocopy of letter (8 June 1995) from John J. Knightly, parish office, Cahir Road, Cashel, county Tipperary, to Mairead Dunlevy, Director, Hunt Museum. Writes that he exhibited present object in Cashel during 1953 and 1961. Church is now celebrating its bicentenary and requests permission to borrow the bell; reply (9 June 1995) permits loan of bell and outlines arrangements; letter of thanks (11 July 1995) from Knightly to Dunlevy; photocopy of extract from publication entitled ‘Treasures of Ireland: Irish Art 3000 B.C.-1500 A.D. (Dublin: Royal Irish Academy, c. 1983) edited by Michael Ryan. Contains image and description of similar bell; photocopy of extract (c. 1950) from catalogue of exhibition held in Limerick to coincide with the Holy Year. Includes entry for the Cashel Bell; photocopy of extract from publication by J. Romilly Allen entitled ‘Celtic Art in Pagan and Christian Times’ (London: Methuen and Co., 1904). Includes description of present object; photocopies of extracts from unidentified publications which describe and include images of the Cashel Bell (dates unspecified). | ||||||||||||||||||||
