English: Cinnamomum camphora, or camphor trees, a native of China and Japan were introduced to the Cape in 1670 via the Dutch East Indies. These trees were planted at Vergelegen by Willem Adriaan van der Stel between 1700 and 1706. They were declared National Monuments by the National Monuments Council in 1942.
