Online searches of the U.S. Copyright Office's Copyright Records web site for "Chestnut Burr"revealed no renewal entry for the 1927 Chestnut Burr. Similar searches of the Stanford University Copyright Renewal Database reveals no copyright renewals for any volume of "Chestnut Burr" during the period from 1923-1963. Accordingly, it appears the copyright was not renewed and therefore it is in the public domain according to either criteria.)
