Draft:Yeni Lisan Movement

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Yeni Lisan Movement (Ottoman Turkish: یكی لسان, romanizedyeni lisan, lit.'new language'), is a literary movement initiated by Genç Kalemler magazine in order to reform the Ottoman Turkish language.

The principals of Ottoman Turkish reform suggested by the Yeni Lisan Movement are:

  1. No grammatical structures to be used in Turkish from Arabic and Persian such as ezāfe.
  2. Reforming the spelling: The spelling of loanwords from Arabic and Persian should match with their pronunciations. (Because Ottoman Turkish preserved "archaic" spellings even though the pronunciation of the words drastically changed).
  3. Creation of a new written standard based on the Istanbul dialect.
