The Wisnom family is a notable family based in San Mateo, CA, known for their crucial role in the creation of the Peninsula communities notably San Mateo and beyond.
Background[edit]
Founding Members[edit]
Robert Wisnom built commercial building and residential homes in San Mateo. Robert became involved in a variety of other businesses. Notably helping to establish the Peninsulas first bank, The Bank of San Mateo which later was absorbed by Crocker-Anglo Bank. Robert's son Sam A. Wisnom went on to build in the area building the National Bank of San Mateo which was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1997.
Robert had five sons and daughters who became important builder and leaders in the bay area. Robert J. Wisnom and brother William, teamed up with Robert Bonner and began the first department store in the Peninsula established in 1905 known as the Wisnom-Bonner store. The store carried household and hardware items sold Dodge automobiles and sold household appliances during the 1920s. In 1924, the Wisnom/Bonner partnership dissolved and the Wisnom family has ran the business for over 100 years.

Honors and Awards[edit]
2023 will mark the 150th year Anniversary of the Wisnom family gathering together for Thanksgiving every year. One of the longest standing familial gatherings in the Western United States. Today there are 99 living descendants of The Wisnom Family, approximately 72 will gather in San Mateo for a week long celebration kicking off at the home built by Samual A. Wisnom for his family which is located in the adjacent city of Hillsborough, CA.

In 2005 Wisnom Hardware celebrated 100 years of business being operated at the time by 4th and 5th generation Wisnom's. Suzi Wisnom Nelson, granddaughter of its founder, owns the business with her husband, Dick. Their niece Allison Wisnom was one of the managers at during the centennial accomplishment.
