Saint Dunwyd or Donat (Welsh: Sain Dunwyd; English: Saint Donat) is a saint whose origins are obscure. In fact many therories have been put forward as to who the saint actually was. The likelihood of his origins are a 6th-century Welsh saint who was friends with or a colleague of Saint Cadoc a 5th–6th-century Abbot of Llancarfan, near Cowbridge in the Vale of Glamorgan, Wales who was the head of a monastery which was famous as a centre of learning. The two churches dedicated to St. Dunwyd/Donat, St Donat's Church, Welsh St Donat's and St Donat's Church, St Donat's, are both located within several miles of Llancarfan, making the theory that this saint being a friend/colleague of St Cadoc the most plausible.

Further Theories[edit]

There have been other theories puit forward as to the origin of Dunwyd/Donat, one being put forward by J. Knight who suggested that the dedicatee of both churches should be St Donatus of Fiesole.
