Oswald: Down the Rabbit Hole is an upcoming American independent horror film directed by Lilton Stewart III. It is a horror reimagining to Walt Disney's cartoon character Oswald the Lucky Rabbit.
Oswald the Lucky Rabbit's rights had been owned by The Walt Disney Company since 2006 after acquiring the trademark from NBCUniversal (parent company of Universal Pictures which took control of the Oswald character in 1928 which led to Disney creating Mickey Mouse), while Disney retains exclusive rights to the depictions of the character from their own franchise, the character and shorts went into the public domain on January 1, 2023, a year before the film was announced.[2][3]
Premise[edit]
Oswald follows main character Art and some of his closest friends as they track down his long-lost family lineage. When they find his Great-Grandpa Oswald’s abandoned home, they are transported to a place lost in time, shrouded by dark Hollywood Magic. The group finds that they are not alone when the cartoon Rabbit, a dark entity, comes to life. Art and his friends must work together to escape their magical prison before the Rabbit gets to them first.

After the copyright lapsed, director Lilton Stewart III and producer Lucinda Bruce began development on Oswald: Down the Rabbit Hole as the film was first announced on January 11, 2024, with principal photography set to begin in spring of that year.[5] The project has been described as "Who Framed Roger Rabbit meets Nightmare on Elm Street".[4]
