The Netherlands are set to participate at the Junior Eurovision Song Contest 2024 in Madrid, Spain. Dutch broadcaster AVROTROS is responsible for the country's participation in the contest and will choose an act to represent the country through the national selection Junior Songfestival 2024.
Background[edit]
The Netherlands is the only country to have participated in every edition of the Junior Eurovision Song Contest since the inaugural 2003 edition. The Netherlands have won the contest on one occasion: in 2009 with the song "Click Clack", performed by Ralf Mackenbach.[1] This was the Netherlands' fifth victory at any Eurovision event, with the previous one achieved over three decades earlier at the Eurovision Song Contest 1975. The 2007 contest was held in the Netherlands, in the venue Ahoy in Rotterdam.[2] The 2012 contest was held in the Netherlands as well, this time in Amsterdam, making it the first country to host the Junior Eurovision Song Contest twice.[3]
In the 2023 contest in Nice, Sep & Jasmijn represented the Netherlands with the song "Holding On to You". They finished in 7th place with 122 points.[4] Immediately following the 2023 edition of the traditional Dutch national final Junior Songfestival on 23 September, the submission period for interested artists was opened, thereby confirming both the country's presence at the Junior Eurovision Song Contest 2024 and the organisation of another edition of Junior Songfestival.[5]
Before Junior Eurovision[edit]
Junior Songfestival 2024[edit]
Junior Songfestival 2024 will be the 21st edition of Junior Songfestival, the competition that determines the Dutch entry for the Junior Eurovision Song Contest.[5][6]
Competing entries[edit]
The submission period for interested artists was open between 23 September 2023 and 31 January 2024.[6] On 12 February, two separate lists of artists advancing further in the competition were published – a list containing 48 acts who who were invited to perform at a preselection (from which a small group of artists would progress to a live audition round),[7] and another, separate list of 29 shortlisted acts which had already advanced directly to the live auditions.[8] The names of the 16 artists who advanced from the preselection were revealed on 27 February, which meant the completed live audition line-up contained a total of 47 entrants.[9][10]
A series of three reveal videos including recordings from the live auditions and backstage content was published via the Junior Songfestival YouTube channel on 5 and 19 April and 3 May 2024. The names of the 20 artists who advanced to the academy stage of the selection were revealed on 17 May.[11]
