Mixteca Mexican Restaurant, or simply Mixteca, is a catering company and small chain of Mexican eateries in Portland, Oregon. The business has operated food carts at Morrison Market[1] and Portland Mercado.[2] From 2019 to 2023, the business operated a brick and mortar restaurant on 82nd Avenue in the southeast Portland part of the Montavilla neighborhood.

Description[edit]

Mixteca served Oaxacan cuisine.[3] The menu included tamales (made using banana leaves) with pork and mole, as well as rice and beans.[4][2]

History[edit]

Doña Paula Asunción began selling tamales and mole at the farmers' market in St. John's in 2012. She received support from Hacienda CDC's Micro Merchant program and formed Mixteca Catering LLC in 2013. By 2016, she was operating at Portland Mercado and Cartlandia, a food cart pod now known as Springwater Cart Park.[5]

Asunción opened a brick and mortar restaurant in Montavilla in 2019, in the space that previously housed Buckley's Catch Sports Pub. During the COVID-19 pandemic, the restaurant experienced seating limits, slowed business, shutdowns, and vandalism.[5] In 2021, Mixteca participated in Around the World in 82 Dishes, organized by the 82nd Avenue Business District.[6] The building that housed the Montavilla restaurant was placed on the market in 2022.[7] The restaurant closed on July 23, 2023,[5] and was replaced by T4 (also known as Tea Four), a bubble tea chain.[8]
