The Mines and Geosciences Services (MGS) is an agency services of the Ministry of Environment, Natural Resources and Energy of the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM) in the Philippines.[1] The agency is an equivalent to the Mines and Geosciences Bureau of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources.
The MGC play a vital role in several key functions within the mining and geosciences sectors. One crucial aspect is the issuance of permits for various activities such as exploration, mining, and transportation of minerals. Additionally, they are responsible for monitoring and enforcing mining laws and regulations to ensure compliance and sustainable practices within the industry. Another important task is the conduct of geohazard assessments and zonation mapping to identify areas prone to geological hazards.[2] Moreover, the department engages in information dissemination and public awareness campaigns to educate the public on mining and geosciences issues, fostering understanding and cooperation among stakeholders. These functions collectively contribute to the effective management and development of mineral resources while mitigating risks and promoting safety within the sector.
The MGS also plays a role in the promotion of responsible mining practices in the BARMM.[3] They work with stakeholders to ensure that mining activities are conducted in an environmentally sustainable and socially responsible manner.
