Meryl, born Cindy Elismar on September 24, 1995 in Lamentin, Martinique, is a French singer-songwriter and rapper, who sings in French and Martinican Creole.

Biography[edit]

Childhood[edit]

Meryl was born in Lamentin, Martinique, to Martinican parents from Saint-Esprit, where she grew up. Her passion for music began at the age of 3, when she performed at home to Michael Jackson and Whitney Houston, as well as melodies by local and international artists. Her father taught her to identify the instruments she heard.

Beginning[edit]

Meryl's musical journey began in 2013 when her cousin Specta, a rapper from Martinique, discovered her thanks to a demo presented by her other cousin and took her under his wing. Thanks to him, she learns how to structure songs and be effective in her lyrics and flow. Together, they made two collaborations, ADN and Agression textuelle.

Meryl was strongly inspired by the music of Martinican singer Maurane Voyer. In addition to her musical influence, the rapper was also inspired by the singer's stage presence - particularly the fact that she performs on stage accompanied by her musicians.

In 2015, she was spotted by Mr. Nin Music, a Montpellier-based producer who decided to produce her, giving birth to sounds like I Luv Dat on Rihanna's "BBHMM", Tounin on Chris Brown's "Ayo", Dans mon bled and then the sound An Chanjé released in 2016, which became her first big underground hit. During this period, she learned about topliners and ghostwriters. This is how she began her work as a ghostwriter, offering her services to national labels.

When her contract with Mr. Nin Music came to an end, she contacted Elaps and joined the ETMG topliner/producer structure, which included her manager Chris, Pyroman, Junior Alaprod, Shabz, Joe Raffa and Stork. Thanks to her work as a ghostwriter and topliner, she has collaborated with many artists. Her participation in albums by SCH, Soprano, Shay and Niska is testimony to this.

Revelation to the general public (2019-)[edit]

In 2019, she released Béni, a song that catapulted her to the forefront of the music scene, in which she describes the difficulties of the world around her. This was followed by hits such as Ah lala, Wollan, Désolé and La Brume featuring Le Motif, the brother of rapper Shay. At the end of 2019, she signed to the AllPoints France label.

Jour Avant Caviar et Quarantaine (2020–2021)[edit]

On February 7, 2020, she releases the single TCQDOF to herald the arrival of her first mixtape Jour Avant Caviar, to be released on February 21, 2020. This mixtape includes her previous hits and features new sounds Comme à la maison, Billets, Coucou, Inanimée, Johnny and 15 AM. To celebrate the release of her mixtape, she unveils the video for Coucou.

On April 10, 2020, she appears on Martinique rapper Tiitof's album Tout à Gagner for their featuring on the sound Pas longtemps.

On July 22, 2020, she released the video for Billets.

On October 1, 2020, she appears on a collaboration with rapper Le Juiice for the featuring O Nono.

On December 18, 2020, she collaborates with Jahyanai on the drill-sounding Numero Uno.

For the 2020 holiday season, she delivers her Quarantaine EP as a Christmas present, in anticipation of her debut album Jour Avant Caviar. On the same day, she releases Papa Noël. From this EP also come JFokpa and Telemula, who appeared during the first confinement in early 2020.

BB Compte, collaborations then musical hiatus (2021–2023)[edit]

In February 2021, she released the track BB Compte with the group Akiyo, in which she evoked the financial abuses of the state. She was then invited by rapper Hatik to collaborate on Maman qui pleure with Tiitof. In May 2021, she collaborated with Todiefor on the track Fuck les cops on an electronic prod. She was then invited by Rachelle Allison on Ma petite, in which the two singers denounced paedophilia in family homes before her absence from the music scene.

Musical comeback and Ozoror (2023-)[edit]

Finally, she seems to be back in the spotlight thanks to an extract from a single featuring Reunionese singer Pix'L. In November 2022, she signed to Universal Music France through a co-publishing deal with her own label Caviar Maison. Her comeback took shape in February 2023 with the release of the single Jack Sparrow.

She then announced the release of her new EP Ozoror on April 14 2023. From this EP came the singles Jack Sparrow and Coca-Cola Mentos.

On November 10, 2023, when the second part of rapper Georgio's Années Sauvages album was released, the public was treated to a featuring between the two artists, Ola.
