Khumalag (Ossetian: Хуымæллæг) is a village in Pravoberezhny District, North Ossetia–Alania.

The village is the administrative center of the Khumalagskoye rural settlement municipality.

Geography[edit]

Khumalag is located 8 km north of Beslan, the administrative center of Pravoberezhny District, on the left bank of the river Kambileyevka and partially on the right bank. It is located 27 km northwest of the republic's capital Vladikavkaz.

Etymology[edit]

The name comes from the Ossetian "хуымæллæг" meaning "humulus".[1] The area surrounding the village was once covered in wild hops.[2]

History[edit]

Khumalag was founded in 1810 by Inal Dudarov.[3] The village was originally named Inalovo after him.

Only 26 families initially settled in Inalovo in 1810. By 1850, 77 households had established themselves in the village. In the 50s, Ossetians from the valleys came to settle in the village. In 1853, 11 Christian families moved from Beslan to Inalovo.

During the Soviet times, the village was incorporated within Kirovsky District. It was then transferred to Pravoberezhny District.
