Gwyn Campbell (born 1952) is an author and academic specializing in the economic and environmental history of Madagascar, Africa, and the Indian Ocean World. The Madagascar Youths: British Alliances and Military Expansion in the Indian Ocean Region, his fifth solo-authored monograph, was published by Cambridge University Press in 2022. He is the founding Director of the Indian Ocean World Centre at McGill University,[1] General Editor of the Palgrave Series in Indian Ocean World Studies,[2] and Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Indian Ocean World Studies.[3]

Life and Career[edit]

Gwyn Campbell was born in Madagascar to missionary parents and grew up in Wales. He received a PhD in History from the University of Wales in 1985. Before embarking on an academic career, he worked as a radio producer for BBC Wales and as the director of an adult education centre in Cardiff.[4] Since entering academia, he has held positions at the University of the Witwatersrand, Avignon University, and McGill University.[5]

In 2010, he was the recipient of a Major Collaborative Research Initiative (MCRI) grant from the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC) of Canada for a project entitled “The Indian Ocean World: The Making of the First global Economy in the Context of Human-Environment Interaction.”[6] In 2011, he founded the Indian Ocean World Centre, a research centre in McGill University’s Department of History and Classical Studies.[7] In 2017, he was the recipient of a SSHRC Partnership Grant for a project entitled “Appraising Risk, Past and Present: Interrogating historical data to enhance understanding of environmental crises in the Indian Ocean World.”[8]

During his academic career, he has published five solo-authored monographs and several edited or co-edited volumes.[1]

He has three children: Rhiannon Gwyn, Rhys ap Gwyn and Lludd ap Gwyn. He is married to Canadian novelist, playwright, and journalist, Marianne Ackerman.
