Giuseppe Dalla Torre del Tempio di Sanguinetto (Rome, 27 August 1943 – Rome, 3 December 2020) was an Italian jurist.
Biography[edit]
Della Torre descended from a noble family originally from Treviso, then moved to Rome. His family always linked to the Holy See[1] [3] [5]
His brother was Fra' Giacomo dalla Torre del Tempio di Sanguinetto, Prince and 80th Grand Master of the Sovereign Military Order of Malta.[1] [3]
His grandfather Giuseppe was the editor-in-chief of L'Osservatore Romano (Vatican Newspaper) from 1920 to 1960.[1] [3]
He was graduated at Sapienza University of Rome in 1967, then he had a doctorate at Lateran University in 1968. [3]
Della Torre began teaching at the University of Bologna, where he taught Constitutional Law and Ecclesiastical Law from 1980 to 1990. [1]
He was rector of LUMSA from 1991 to 2014.He was president of Vatican City Tribunal from 1997 to 2019.[1] [3]
He was chief judge in the Vatileaks trial, in 2012. [1] [3]
He was first a member and then President of the Union of Catholic Jurists and a member of the Italian Bioethics Committee.
Della Torre has been formerly Lieutenant General of the Order of the Holy Sepulchre from 2011 to 2017. [2] [6]
Della Torre died in Rome on 3 December 2020 due to complications from COVID-19. [1]
The funeral was celebrated in St. Peter's Basilica by Cardinal Secretary of State Pietro Parolin. [1]
The Chair of Canon Law of LUMSA was dedicated to him. [9]
