Foster is an upcoming American animated musical fantasy comedy film directed by Michael Thurmeier and Steve Martino, and screenplay by Tim Federle and Doug Langdale. It was set to be produced by Annapurna Animation and distributed by Netflix. It is Annapurna Animation's second feature-length film, following Nimona (2023).

Production[edit]

On February 12, 2018, it was announced that Karen Disher and Steve Martino would co-direct a animated fantasy musical for Blue Sky Studios under the working title Foster with Tim Federle writing the script, Bruce Anderson, Gillian Carr, Marc Platt, and Lori Forte producing the film, and Pasek and Paul to write the songs.

Cancellation[edit]

In April 2021, film was permanently cancelled after Blue Sky Studios shut down.

Revival by Annapurna and Netflix[edit]

In December 2024, it was announced that Netflix had picked up the rights of the film, while Animal Logic provides animation where Blue Sky left off. Annapurna Animation would also take care of the remaining animation. Michael Thurmeier were brought on in to work on the story after directing Blue Sky's previous film Ice Age.

Music[edit]

On February 12, 2018, Ben Pasek and Justin Paul will write the songs for Foster. On October 16, 2020, John Powell and Marc Shaiman will compose the film score. Christophe Beck composed the score, marking his second collaboration with Annapurna Animation following Nimona (2023).

Release[edit]

On February 12, 2018, Foster was set for release on March 5, 2021. On October 16, 2020, the release date was moved to August 17, 2021. It was revived by Annapurna Animation with Netflix handling the distribution and was scheduled for a summer 2025 release.
