History
[edit]Establishment of relations and original chancery
[edit]The United States and Nigeria established bilateral relations on October 1, 1960, the day that Nigeria gained its independence from the United Kingdom. On that day, Nigeria opened its embassy in Washington, D.C., the U.S. capital, and the United States opened its embassy in Lagos.
The original chancery was in use from 1960 until 2000, when the United States embassy was transferred to the current building in Abuja.
