Thomas's Cycle Revolution[1] is a British cycle retailer. It was opened in 1984 in Ipswich by passionate cyclist Richard Thomas[2]. The store stocked bikes directly from the biggest British bicycle manufacturer at the time, Raleigh. The partnership with Raleigh gave the original name to the store Thomas's Raleigh Cycle Centre.
Store Openings
[edit]Due to the initial success of their store in Ipswich, the company decided to expand and open a second store within the same city in 1988. Shortly after, in 1990 due to high demand a third branch was opened in Bury St Edmunds.
In 1998 it was decided to move one of the Ipswich stores and the Bury St Edmunds store to a purpose built premise in Colchester.
Between 2009 and 2010 the stores saw further growth, leading to an expansion on the Colchester store and a refurbishment of the original Ipswich store.
In 2012, due to even more demand a new sister store was opened near the Colchester location under the name Cycle Evolution which would focus exclusively on high end road bikes. This store would go on to offer Retül bicycle fittings for customers wishing to maximise their cycling experience and performance.
In 2013 they opened their first Franchising store for the brand Specialized Bicycle Components in Chelmsford.
In August 2017 they saw a further expansion with another Franchise store in Norwich, this time under the Giant Bicycles brand name.
This would mark their fist time since 1990 that they expanded outside of their home county of Essex.
In April 2022 they would further continue their partnership with Specialized Bicycle Components and open a second store in Norwich[3]
In 2023 after the purchase of Rutland Cycling by Specialized Bicycle Components[4] Cycle Revolution took over management of the Cambridge franchise store for Giant Bicycles which was operated by Rutland.[5] In the same year they also announced the opening of a store focusing on Electric Mountain bike in Colchester named Kinetic Revolution.[6]
Rebranding
[edit]Cycle Revolution saw it's first rebrand in 1993, when they moved away from their original name of "Thomas's Raleigh Cycle Center".[2] They saw a further refresh in 2022 with a further rebrand to establish their move into more modern times.[7]
Awards
[edit]In 2022 Cycle Revolution was a runner up for the BikeBiz awards under the category "Omnichannel Retailer of the Year"[8]. Later in 2023 they would be nominated again for the same category and win in November.[9]
