A cuff lock in the context of an oil rig is a cuff with handles that facilitates the handling of the drill pipe at the rotary table of an oil rig. Care must be taken to ensure that the cuff lock is locked and secure before attempting to manipulate it. A broken cuff lock may fall into the bore hole which can be several hundred meters long. This is a particularly unfortunate event as all drilling activities must stop until the cuff lock is 'fished out' by tedious and expensive means where every hour of delay can cost thousands of dollars.
