Cavatina Duo is a chamber music ensemble consisting of Spanish flutist Eugenia Moliner and Bosnian guitarist Denis Azabagic[1][2]. The duo is known for its performances of a diverse repertoire that includes Baroque, Classical, contemporary works, and commissioned pieces. Formed in 1999, the duo has performed in over 30 countries at various venues and festivals.

Early Formation and Musical Style

Moliner and Azabagic met while studying at CODARTS in the Netherlands, leading to the formation of the Cavatina Duo in 1999[3]. Their repertoire includes works ranging from Baroque and Classical eras to contemporary compositions, as well as original commissions. They are recognized for their ensemble work and their interpretations of both traditional and modern music.

The Cavatina Duo has been noted for its technical skill and interpretative ability. Their performances have been featured on radio and television stations such as WFMT (Chicago), NPR (USA), and RNE (Spain). They have been profiled in music magazines including Chamber Music America[4], FluteTalk[5], Classical Guitar[6], Soundboard, TodoFlauta, and Ritmo[7]. The Cavatina Duo is the first flute and guitar duo to be featured on the covers of Classical Guitar Magazine, FluteTalk, and Ritmo.

The duo has collaborated with a wide range of chamber ensembles, including the Pacifica Quartet, Aspen Trio, Avalon Quartet, Chicago Chamber Musicians, and Civitas Ensemble. Their programming extends to solo performances and collaborations with symphony orchestras, such as the Chicago Sinfonietta, Daejeon Philharmonic, Camerata Serbica, Langyang Symphony Orchestra, and others. Upcoming Projects

The Cavatina Duo's next major release is River of Fire, a collaboration with the Pacifica Quartet, featuring commissioned works inspired by Gypsy music. This project will be released on Cedille Records in 2025 and includes compositions by Clarice and Sérgio Assad, Stacey Garrop, Atanas Ourkouzounov and Matthew Dunn[10]

Teaching and Artistic Direction

Eugenia Moliner and Denis Azabagic are faculty members at the University of Illinois at Chicago[11][12] and regularly give masterclasses in Europe, the USA, and Asia. They are also artistic directors of the Festival Juan Gual Esteve in Burriana, Spain, and the Chicago Guitar Festival, both of which include international competitions aimed at young musicians.
