Personal life
[edit]Don Andrikku Jayaratne Buddhika Nirodha Dananjaya Jayaratne, was born on 1 August 1974, in Ragama, Sri Lanka, as the only child of Daya and Sumithra Jayaratne. Both of whom are retired government employees.
Jayaratne completed his primary education at Asoka College, Colombo, and attended Ananda College, Colombo, for his secondary education.[7] After completing his education, Jayaratne joined the aviation industry. He also worked as a freelance fashion designer and conducted a few fashion shows during this time. His career in the aviation industry ended when he transitioned to the film industry in 2001, but he continued his passion for dress designing by contributing to film productions as a costume designer. Rosa Wasanthaya, Dedunu Wessa, Eka Malaka Pethi are a few of the productions for which Jayaratne served as the costume designer.[8][9][10]
Jayaratne married Upachala Harankahadeniya in 2014, and their son, Thejaan Jayaratne, was born in 2015.[11]
Recognising a societal reset during the pandemic, Jayaratne established Artha by Buddhika Jayaratne, a concept furniture store in 2021[12]. This venture was born out of his desire for uniqueness, conservation values, and survival, with a focus on sustainable living. Artha designs, manufactures, and sells up-cycled and reclaimed wooden furniture while minimising deforestation and also supporting tradesmen and their families.
Acting career
[edit]Jayaratne made his acting debut in Rosa Wasanthe, directed by Udayakantha Warnasuriya, in 2001, which he initially joined the production as the costume designer.[13] Jayaratne continued to work with Warnasuriya in several projects, including Senasuru Maruwa, for which he won the Best Actor (Negative) Award for his role at the 2013 Derana Film Awards.[14][6]
In 2002, Jayaratne ventured into the Sri Lankan teledrama industry with the role of Depath Nai,[15] a teledrama by Eranga Senarathna. Since then, Jayaratne played main and supporting roles in number of teledramas. Chandoli, Sathara Denek Senpathiyo, Amuthu Minissu are some of his notable work in Sri Lankan teledrama industry. Subsequently Jayaratne won several appriciation awards for his performances in teledramas.[16][17][18]
Throughout his career, he collaborated with renowned Sri Lankan teledrama and film directors such as Jayantha Chandrasiri, Senesh Dissanaike, Chandran Ratnam, and Sanjaya Nirmal. Jayaratne's role in Midunu Vishwaya, a film by Jayantha Chandrasiri, attracted media attention and is considered one of Jayaratne's best performances thus far.[19]
In 2023, Jayaratne made his first international appearance in Arugam Bay, directed by Marco Carmel and produced by United Channel Movies (UCM) in Israel.[20] His second international feature film, Sunny's Mansion, produced by Zayan Productions in Australia, is scheduled to be released in 2023.[21] The film was written and directed by award winning Australian director and film writer Herman Perera.[22]
