Avondale is an unincorporated community in Tarrant County, Texas. Although it is considered an unincorporated/sparsely populated rural community, it is a bit of an interesting case as it is known as a hamlet according to Google, and a ghost town to residents of nearby Haslet. It is located sixteen miles northwest of downtown Fort Worth, and about 4.5 miles southwest of Haslet.

History[edit]

Avondale was first associated as an extension of the Fort Worth and Denver Railway in 1882. Officials of the railway surveyed the area and named it for the attractive looks of the area. Citizens began to migrate to the area, and a small village formed.[1]

In 1890, a post office was opened, making the small town official. By 1910, the population was about 18. Around this same time, several more buildings were built, most notably a school that had 46 students and one teacher. The students came from a wide area in the county, coming from several different nearby towns, like Haslet.[2]

The town remained a small, quaint village for another few years until Avondale's decline.

Decline[edit]

Throughout the 1900s, many highways were being built to suit the growing popularity of automobiles. In 1920, the newly constructed Highway 81 bypassed Avondale directly.

Similar to many other small towns in the early 19th century, the bypassing of the town led to its immediate decline and many of the original residents moved out to larger towns. The few stores in the town closed, and soon enough the post office.

In 1924, the last remaining building, a depot, closed. Avondale now remains a ghost town, but surrounding buildings in the area make it a sparsely populated rural community, and a map from 1976 shows it as so. The current population of Avondale as of 2023 remains unknown.[3]

Geography/Location[edit]

Avondale currently remains at the intersection between U.S. Route 287 and Farm Road 718 in the northwestern portion of Tarrant County. The zip code for Avondale is 76179. Nearby towns with larger populations include Haslet, Pecan Acres, Newark, Rhome, Roanoke, and the northern portion of Fort Worth.
