Afro-American Gazette (1991-1995) was an African American newspaper and periodical that was first published on January 1, 1991 and whose last documented publication was August 7, 1995.[1]

Originating in Grand Rapids, Michigan, Afro-American Gazette was published by Patricia E. (née Grier) Mathis, and distributed by Topaz Marketing & Distributing Co., of which she was also President and CEO.[2] The frequency of publication varied: monthly from January 1991 to August 1992, weekly from August 31 and September 6 1992 to November 23 and 29 1992, and monthly, again, from December 1992 to December 1993.[3]

Publication History[edit]

Afro-American Gazette had two publishers Michelle B. (née Bibbs) Plear and Walter L. Mathis Sr.[4] Editor Walter L. Mathis Sr. was married to the publisher and creator, Patricia E. Mathis, who often undertook the alias Patricia E. Grier or P.E. Grier for publication matters.[5]

In the last documented issue of Afro-American Gazette from August 7, 1995, the publication announced an upcoming title rebrand that would start January 1996.[6] The publication took on the new name TAKE PRIDE! Community.[7] According to University of Wisconsin-Madison libraries, TAKE PRIDE! Community publications could continue from November/December 1997 to July/August 1998 with at least three issues.

Under the new name of TAKE PRIDE! Community, the publication would look to expand its coverage to reach major cities in the midwest.[8] They also aimed to increase their target audience to all Ethnic groups, with ethnic pertaining to group sharing a common and distinctive culture, religion, or language – denoting emphasis on African Americans in nearby Michigan counties such as Kent, Kalamazoo, and Muskegon.[9]
