Adonis Patrick Rose (born January 11, 1975) Is an American drummer, composer, bandleader and educator.
Biography
[edit]Adonis Rose, 49, is a Grammy winning artist from the city of New Orleans with over 50 recordings to his credit, eight as a leader. Rose is the Managing and Artistic Director of the New Orleans Jazz Orchestra (https://www.thenojo.com/), a position he took over January 2017. In October 2017 Rose led the 18 piece orchestra to it’s first concert season in two years, bringing in world renowned artists Sheila E, Dee Dee Bridgewater, Ledisi, Slick Rick, Miki Howard, Renee Neufville, Eric Benet, and others to perform with the NOJO at the orchestra’s performing arts venue, the New Orleans Jazz Market. Rose is instrumental in the organization’s success by developing programs, performances and partnerships year round. Rose also released two recordings with NOJO, Songs, a tribute to the legendary Allen Toussaint, Petite Fleur in 2021 featuring French vocalist Cyrille Aimee and a new upcoming release entitled the Purge.
Rose has performed and recorded with the biggest names in jazz for over two decades including Terence Blanchard, Betty Carter, Dianne Reeves, Marcus Roberts, Jazz at Lincoln Center, Harry Connick Jr, Wynton Marsalis, and six recordings with longtime friend Nicholas Payton. His touring and recording credits also include esteemed artists Dee Dee Bridgewater, Nnenna Freelon, Ellis Marsalis, and Kurt Elling. Rose is an educator, festival producer, composer, and performer. After relocating to the DFW area in 2005, Rose served six years as Artist in Residence at University of Texas Arlington, Artist in Residence for Cadillac’s Jazz by the Boulevard Festival, producer of the Keller Jazz in June series, and founder of the Fort Worth Jazz Orchestra (https://www.fortworth.com/listings/fort-worth-jazz-orchestra/7084/), a 501 c (3) non profit organization. Over his twenty eight year career Adonis Rose has performed at every major jazz festival, performing arts center and jazz club in the world. Including Carnegie Hall, Olympia in Paris, North Sea Jazz Festival, Umbria, Birdland, Apollo Theater, Newport Jazz Festival, Jazz At Lincoln Center and hundreds of others.
Adonis Rose won a Grammy Award https://artistecard.com/adonisrose with the New Orleans Jazz Orchestra for Best Large Ensemble in 2009. In January 2021 Adonis Rose was chosen as the New Orleans Music and Culture Curator for the JazzAscona Festival in Switzerland. That same year Rose started a nationally syndicated NPR Radio show entitled the Lagniappe Sessions featuring musicians, artists, and New Orleans culture bearers. Adonis Rose Adonis Rose Biography currently sits on the board of directors for the Cape May Jazz Festival Foundation, Tulane School of Public Health and Tropical Medicine, Recording Academy Board of Governors, and the Louisiana Music and Heritage Experience. In September 2022, Rose was commissioned to write an original composition, entitled "Sacred Spaces" in partnership with the Cleo Parker Robinson Dance company, based on the St. Landry Parish church burnings in 2019. The piece was premiered at the Ellie Caulkins Opera House in Denver, Colorado.
Early Life
[edit]Adonis Rose began playing the drums at age four, learning his rudiments from his father Vernon Severin who is also a drummer. Rose quickly became a proficient snare drummer and later became section leader of the drum section at P.A. Capdau Junior High School. After Capdau, Rose auditioned and attended the New Orleans Center for Creative Arts and Francis T. Nichols High School in the ninth ward area of New Orleans. Rose also received a full scholarship to attend St. Augustine High School to join their marching band but was persuaded by his parents to attended NOCCA instead. While attending NOCCA Rose was under the direction of trumpeter and educator Clyde Kerr, Jr. Other musicians attending NOCCA with Rose was Nicholas Payton, Jason Stewart, Dwight Fitch, Mark Braud, Abram Wilson, and others. In his sophomore year of high school, Rose was accepted into Warren Easton High School where is graduated. Rose later auditioned for Berklee College of Music and received the prestigious Presidential Scholarship which provided four years of full tuition. Days after his high school graduation he was invited to tour with Grammy and Oscar winner Terence Blanchard. Rose was seventeen years old.
