Sulaiman Adeniyi Adekola (born February 4, 1943) is a Nigerian Electrical and Electronic Engineer. He has held and continues to hold significant positions at several universities, including the University of Lagos (UNILAG) and the Federal University Otuoke, Bayelsa.

Early Life and Education

Sulaiman Adeniyi Adekola was born on February 4th, 1943, in Olupe’s compound, Ijaye Kunrunmi, Abeokuta South Local Government Area, Ogun State, Nigeria. His father, Chief Oseni Adelokun Adekola, was known for his work as a farmer and goldsmith in Ilaro Egbado, Yewa. His mother, Chief Mrs. Saadatu Atoke Solope (also known as Alafoti) Adekola, was involved in trading Aso Oke fabrics and other entrepreneurial ventures in Ilaro, Yewa. During his formative years, Sulaiman Adeniyi attended several schools, including St. Joseph Catholic Primary School, Ilaro, Victory Primary School Oke-Ado, Ibadan, and Ibadan Boys High School. He continued his education at Ahmadiyya/Anwar Islam Grammar School, Eleiyele, Ibadan, where he excelled academically.

Academic Career

Professor Adekola commenced his academic journey at the University of Lagos (UNILAG) in 1977, where he served as a Lecturer Grade I until his retirement in 2008. Over his thirty-one-year tenure at UNILAG, he demonstrated dedication to both teaching and research, steadily advancing to the rank of full Professor in 1983. During his tenure, Professor Adekola held various administrative roles, including Head of Department, Acting Dean, and Deputy Vice-Chancellor.

Throughout his career, Professor Adekola significantly influenced the academic landscape of Electrical and Electronics Engineering in Nigeria. He has been a stalwart figure in the field of Electrical Engineering for over four decades, making significant contributions to teaching, research, and mentorship. His impactful career has spanned seven prestigious universities in Nigeria, including institutions such as the University of Lagos, Akoka, Lagos State (UNILAG); Federal University of Technology, Owerri, Imo State (FUTO); Lagos State University, Ojo, Lagos State (LASU); Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta, Ogun State (FUNAAB); Niger Delta University, Wilberforce Island, Bayelsa State (NDU); Cross River University of Technology, Calabar, Cross River State (CRUTECH); and Federal University, Otuoke, Bayelsa State (FUO). Following his secondary education, Adekola pursued further studies with a scholarship from the Electricity Corporation of Nigeria (ECN). He obtained a Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) degree in Electrical Engineering from Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria, Nigeria, graduating in 1968. Subsequently, Adekola completed a two-year pupillage with the Electricity Corporation of Nigeria (ECN).

He was awarded a scholarship under the African Graduate (AFGRAD) Fellowship program to pursue graduate studies in the United States. At Ohio State University, Columbus, Ohio, he received advanced instruction from notable scholars such as Professors R. G. Kouyoumjian, Jack Richmond, C. H. Walter (Buck), Leon Peters Jr., G. A. Thiele, R. C. Ruddock, Dean T. Davis, Warren, Stefan Drobot, and Scristosafer. There, he earned both a Master of Science (M.Sc.) and a Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Electrical Engineering, specializing in Engineering Electromagnetics, Antenna Analysis & Design, and Applied Mathematics, in 1972 and 1975, respectively.

Adekola's doctoral research led to the development of a proposal titled “On the radar remote sensing of sea states,” which secured him a prestigious 30-month post-doctoral research position at the Wave Propagation Laboratory/National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (WPL/NOAA), Boulder, Colorado, sponsored by the United States National Research Council (NRC). His Ph.D. thesis has been cited in various patent grants, including US Patent No. 5,509,304, issued on April 23rd, 1996.[1]. According to ResearchGate, his scholarly contributions have garnered close to 140 citations[2].

In 1988, the Acoustic Society of America conferred upon him the esteemed title of ‘Fellow’ (FASA) for his significant contributions to pattern directivity control. This recognition marked the beginning of a series of accolades, with four other professional institutions subsequently bestowing upon him the title of ‘Fellow’: the British Institution of Engineering & Technology (FIET-1988), Nigerian Academy of Science (FAS-1990), Nigeria Society of Engineers (FNSE-1994), and the Nigerian Academy of Engineering (FAEng-1999).

Professor Adekola's leadership and expertise were further acknowledged by the British Institution of Engineering & Technology (IET), where he served as a Council Member and Chairman of the Nigeria Centre from 1990 to 1996. In 2011, the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), USA, honored him with the status of Life Senior Member, underscoring his lasting impact on the field.

In recognition of his dedicated service and academic excellence, Professor Adekola received a 'Long Service Merit Award' in 2003. The culmination of his illustrious career came in 2019 when the University of Lagos appointed him as Emeritus Professor of Electrical & Electronics Engineering.
